The Rarevision VHS Lite for PC app

Get out your Walkman and Macintosh SE, because it’s the ’80s and we’re shooting lots of grainy videos. At least that’s what we’re pretending to do. There’s a new app that lets you shoot videos that look like they were taken on your family’s huge camcorder.

This app is called Rarevision VHS Camcorder lite. It reminds us of how far video has come in the past 30 years.

Rarevision VHS Lite for PC provides users with a plethora of unique options to mirror the “grainy” effects often associated with recordings from the 1980s and 1990s. Some interesting functions include the ability to embed an on-screen date, flashing titles, a fake zoom lens, and image glitches that were quite common in the past. In fact, even the audio feedback can be modified so that the same retro appeal can be heard and seen.

What does it offer?

The basic interface for the app is just about as simple as a real VHS camcorder. On the right you’ve got a Record button, on the left you have a Menu button. On the lower half of the screen you have zoom (T and W) buttons, and in the lower right-hand corner, you have a Play button. The app’s interface is based on the JVC GR-C1, the first camcorder to feature a built-in VHS tape deck. Released in March 1984, the GR-C1 is probably most famous for being Marty McFly’s camera in Back to the Future.

The Play button brings you to a set of videos in-app where you can choose to share or delete. Unfortunately – for whatever reason – this console doesn’t allow sharing directly to YouTube. The good news is that every video you capture here is also on your standard Camera Roll, from when you can share with all apps with ease.

Another feature is that On VHS CAM, while you’re recording you can push and hold the record button to take still photos. This allows you to take a hybrid approach to photography and video– to get the upside of the dynamic moving videos and audio, while also being able to extract still images.

  • BEST app for simulating old videotape recordings
  • tape noise, static and tracking distortion
  • On-screen date and time graphics
  • Fake the on-screen date so people think you’re way younger–or older–than you really are
  • Add really awful title graphics (FLASHING TOO!) with the built-in titler
  • Phony zoom lens feature dramatically enhances the cheese factor
  • Control the effect during recording using your finger or by shaking your device
  • Easily share videos from within the app or through Camera Roll
  • Built-in clip viewer for playing back, deleting and sharing clips
  • Widescreen recording option
  • Choose your frame rate: 24, 25 or 30 (iOS only)
  • HD video recording on iPhone 4s and newer devices (1080p requires iPhone 5 or better)
